Today was "Setsubun," literally means “the day between two seasons,”
which is the end of winter and the begining of spring.
On this day, the "Bean-throwing Ceremony" is held at temples or shrines.
Celebrities are invited to throw these beans at famous big temples or shrines;
however, at Umeda Shrine near my home, local great people throw whatever
Actually my brother Tartan had joined this event for the first time
as I experienced 2 years ago! He looked a lot of fun!
It is done at home on the night of Setsubun.
We throw roasted soy beans inside and outside our houses shouting,
"Oniwa-soto, Fukuwa-uchi!" meaning "Devils out! Good luck in!"
In some families with children, an adult, usually dad, puts on a Oni(devil)'s mask
and approach children. Children throw beans at devil to make it ran away.
It is a custom also to eat as many beans as ages.
Eating fortune sushi roll, ehou-maki is another
special traditional event which has become popular recently.
It is a sushi roll made from rice, cucumber, shiitake mushroom,
eel and so on. It is said if we eat it facing the happy direction
while keeping quiet, we will become happy.
1, Face the lucky direction of the year.
2, Eat an entire Sushi Roll without stopping.
3, Shouldn't speak until you are finished with the sushi.
4, Good fortune will be gone if you speak.
Here is a fortune... Yes, I got a good one!
